The REVISTA LATINOAMERICANA DE MICROBIOLOGÍA
is published in four numbers, annually, by the Asociación Latinoamericana
de Microbiología and Asociación Mexicana de Microbiología.
Unpublished original papers, notes or short communications, and
review articles, in all areas of microbiology including studies
on archaeal, bacterial, fungal, and eukaryotic microbes and their
viruses and plasmids, are published.
The journal covers the following microbiology disciplines: basic,
structural, taxonomy, phylogeny, genetics, molecular biology,
biochemistry, enzymology, physiology, food, industrial, biotechnology;
medical, diagnostic, ecology, environmental, plant, soil, and
virology.
Original papers should be written in English, with an abstract
both in English and in Spanish.
Review articles written in either Spanish or Portuguese will
be considered for publication, but authors are encouraged to
submit their works in English.
Occasionally other sections will be included, such as Editorials,
Opinions, Letters to the Editor, and reviews on books, videos
and web pages.
Presentation of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be submitted to the
Editor-in-Chief as an original printed hard-copy, in a recent
PC "Word" version, together with an electronic version
in a 3.5" diskette. They should be double-spaced throughout
the document. Authors must ensure that all sections of their
paper, excluding figures, are presented in a single file, updated
to incorporate all revisions, and that the version on the diskette
matches the final hard copy.
The title page (page number one) should comprise:
the name(s) of the author(s) (stating the corresponding author),
the title, name of the institution(s), any footnotes, and the
address where correspondence should be sent. Please include a
Phone and Fax number and E-mail address.
Abstract. Each paper must be preceded by a summary
of the most important results in no more than 200 words, written
both in English and in Spanish. Thus, the title of the manuscript
in Spanish must be provided. The abstract must include three
to five key words.
Original papers
Original papers should also contain the
following sections: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results,
Discussion and References.
Introduction should define the scope of the work,
in relation to the state-of-the-art in the field and include
the aim of the work.
Materials and methods should provide enough information
to permit repetition of the experimental work.
Results should be presented with clarity and precision
using tables, figures, and graphics.
Discussion should deal with the interpretation
of the results and not recapitulate them. When stating hypothesis,
predictions or speculations, identify them as such.
References should include works that are cited
in the text and that have been accepted for publication. They
should be cited at the end of the paper in alphabetical order
under the first author's name, and numbered consecutively.
Examples.
Journal articles:
1.- Campos, J., M. Martínez-Pacheco
& C. Cervantes. 1995. Hexavalent chromium reduction by a
chromate-resistant Bacilus sp. Strain. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek
68:203-208.
Books
2.- Cervantes, C. & S. Silver, 190.
Inorganic cation and anion trasport systems of Pseudomonas,
pp.359-372. In S. Silver, A M. Chakrabarty, B. Iglewski &
S. Kaplan (Eds). Pseudomonas: Biotransformation, Pathogenesis
and Evolving Biotechnology, American Society for Microbiology,
Washington D.C.
Electronic material, commercial software,
freely available software and articles on line, and web pages
must be carefully described and addressed.
Responsibility for the accuracy of bibliographic references rests
entirely with the authors. Citations in the text should be by
the number of the paper in the reference section, written in
superscript.
Illustrations must be restricted to the minimum
needed to clarify the text. Previously published illustrations
are usually not accepted. Explanations of figures should be mentioned
in the text and must be numbered consecutively and submitted
separately.
Legends must be short and concise and appended to the text. They
should provide a brief, self-sufficient description of each illustration.
Tables should be typed as text, using the Word
table editor. Do not use graphics software to create tables.
Graphics should be made from Graphics Excel or
Power Point. Complex graphics can be performed in Sigma Plot
or Statistica. Originals should be printed in laser or jet printers
in high resolution or photographic quality paper.
Figures and images should be captured in jpg, gif,
ppt, tif, bmp files. Send original prints in black and white
or color, on photographic quality paper.
Short contributions
Short reports of new results of special
interest will be published as a short contribution. Authors are
asked to include a note explaining why the text merits publication
in this form. A short contribution should not exceed 3 printed
pages, including tables and figures (9 pages double-spaced, approximately).
These short contributions do not require separate Introduction,
Material and Methods, Results and Discussion sections, but all
pertinent information should be included in the text. The Editor-in-Chief
reserves the right to decide if an original article constitutes
a short communication.
Reviews
Reviews describe the current status or
field, placing the various contributions of the field in perspective,
giving its historical development and future directions. The
authors are encouraged to give their critical opinion and to
discuss their own views of the field.
General considerations
The authors will make available upon request,
to the scientific community for non-commercial use, all strains,
plasmids and other biological specimens described in their publication.
Experiments with humans and laboratory animals must fulfill local
and international ethical standards.
Use and style of numbers, measurements, scientific nomenclature,
sources for materials, and abbreviations or any question not
considered in this guideline, must be consulted in the ASM
Style Manual for Journals and Books (American Society for
Microbiology, Washington D.C. 1991) or Uniform Requirements
for Manuscripts Submitted to Medical Journals (Ann. Inter.
Med. 1997. 126:36-47; reprinted in Arch. Med. Res. 1997. 28:441).
Correspondence
The corresponding author will be notified
by E-mail upon the receipt of a manuscript. No correspondence
will be sent during the review of the paper.
All submissions are critically reviewed before publication by
two referees. When two opposed verdicts are received, a third
referee and editor opinions are considered.
The Editor-in-Chief will inform to the authors, as soon as possible,
if the paper has been accepted, rejected or returned for modification.
The manuscripts and correspondence should
be mailed to:
